Background of the Study
Dysmenorrhea, commonly referred to as menstrual pain, is a prevalent condition among women, particularly adolescents. It is characterized by pain during menstruation that can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that affects daily functioning. Adolescents, in particular, are vulnerable to the impacts of dysmenorrhea, as it can interfere with their school performance, social life, and overall quality of life (Onwuliri et al., 2024). Nurses play a vital role in the management of dysmenorrhea by providing care, educating patients, and offering treatment options such as pain management strategies, lifestyle modifications, and when necessary, referrals to specialists.
At Niger State General Hospital, nurses are often the first healthcare professionals to encounter adolescent patients experiencing menstrual pain. However, research suggests that many healthcare providers, including nurses, may lack adequate knowledge about the management of dysmenorrhea, which can result in inadequate care and unaddressed symptoms for patients (Akinmoladun et al., 2024). There is a need to assess nurses' knowledge and management practices related to dysmenorrhea, especially among adolescent patients, to ensure effective care.
This study seeks to assess the level of nurses' knowledge regarding dysmenorrhea and their management strategies for adolescent females at Niger State General Hospital. The findings will provide important insights into the adequacy of nurses' training in managing this common yet impactful condition.
Statement of the Problem
Dysmenorrhea is a significant health concern among adolescent females, yet many nurses may lack sufficient knowledge to manage the condition effectively. At Niger State General Hospital, the management of dysmenorrhea is crucial for ensuring that adolescent females receive adequate care and are not unduly affected by this condition. However, there is limited information regarding nurses' knowledge and management practices related to dysmenorrhea, which may contribute to inadequate care.

Research Hypotheses
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working at Niger State General Hospital who are involved in the care of adolescent females with dysmenorrhea. It will assess their knowledge, management strategies, and the barriers they face in providing care. The study does not include other healthcare professionals, such as gynecologists, who may also be involved in the management of dysmenorrhea.
Limitations of the study include the reliance on self-reported data, which may be biased. The cross-sectional design of the study may also limit the ability to assess changes over time in nurses' knowledge and management practices.
